Success Story of the Month:
“This month’s success story, comes from Michael B. at our Davenport home:
There I was—a successful, fulfilling career in healthcare that I loved, friends and family that I loved, a life that I loved. Then, one night after a few drinks, I decided to go to the grocery store. I got T-boned by a young kid on his phone, and I got a DUI. Once I lost my driver’s license, everything went downhill from there. I lost the job that I loved. I was isolated at home and no longer able to see any of my friends. I got a job at my local hospital that was far beneath my capabilities, and I hated it. I drank, and then I drank more, and then I drank all the time.
Eventually, I lost that hospital job. My home, which I had owned for 15 years, was being foreclosed on. I was possibly heading to jail for a probation violation because I could rarely pass the urinalysis. Things were pretty bad. I don’t think that I actually wanted to die, but I was certainly okay with the thought of being dead. Something had to change.
I decided to give inpatient treatment a shot. While in treatment, there was a lot of talk about sober living. I’ll be honest—there were as many bad stories as there were good. Stories of people covering for others so they could use, stories of uninhabitable living environments. I was nervous, but I knew going home was not in my best interest. I decided that I would move into the Transformative Lives Recovery Home in the Quad Cities. This has probably been the best decision I’ve ever made in my battle against addiction.
I can honestly tell you—living in this home has kept me sober. There were moments early on when I am certain I would have turned to alcohol had I not been living here. The accountability, having people around—everything about living here has kept me from returning to my old ways. Now, I’m going on eight months (222 days), and I haven’t had one of those “moments” in quite some time. Looking forward, I’m close to getting my driver’s license back and am working toward getting back into the career that I’ve always loved. I am, and will always be, eternally grateful for what this house has done for me and my journey to sobriety.”

Success Story of the Month:
“Hello, my name is Kyle, and I am an alcoholic. Six months ago, on October 30th to be exact, I had my first honest and sober day in a very long time. I found myself in a terrifying situation—I was on death's doorstep. I was sick, dying, and stark raving crazy. I find myself smiling now at how wild that is, but it certainly wasn’t amusing then. While sitting, shaking, in detox for what I knew had to be the last time, I was told about a place called Top of the World Ranch in Milan, Illinois. I didn’t even give it a second thought—I was done and ready. My addiction had beaten me down to a point of true surrender. Upon arriving there, I found myself broken—in heart, mind, and soul. But the people at the Ranch brought me back to life. I decided that, no matter what, I was going to do this thing and allow others to help me along the way. At that point, I had almost lost everything. My job was over. I had no license, no friends, a heartbroken family, and very little hope. That is not the case today. As I sit here writing this, I have gained so much more than I ever could have dreamed. Today, I have a good job, a valid driver’s license, and a group of friends who truly love and care about who I am. I have a family that can sleep peacefully at night and can once again have their son, brother, and uncle in their lives. The people who care about me no longer have to wonder when they might get that call that I am no longer around. I have also been given the opportunity to serve my recovery community as a manager at Transformative Lives Recovery Homes. None of these things seemed real—let alone possible—six or seven months ago. It truly is like the phrase says: "It is always darkest before the dawn." As someone who had gone through treatment multiple times, I had very little hope left. But seeing the staff at the Ranch, who had once been where I was, and the people in the rooms of recovery who were turning their lives around, gave me just enough hope to go all in and give it everything I had. Today, I understand there is no finish line—it will be a lifelong journey. However, the battles get smaller, and you come to realize what is truly important in life. I will forever be grateful for what has been given to me and hope that one day, I can return that favor to another suffering addict. God has truly done for me what I could not do for myself. "By the grace of God go I." I will close by saying this: that addict or alcoholic you see going in and out of recovery might just surprise you one day. They might decide to stay.
Don’t count them out. Never lose hope.”

Success Story of the Month:
This month, we want to highlight one of our clients who attended The Abbey Center’s treatment program, Patrick S.:
“At just 15, addiction began taking control of my life, leading me down a dark path. Four days after my 21st birthday, I found myself in a detox clinic, trapped in intense psychosis. After making it through, I committed the next 45 days to treatment at The Abbey. My transformation was evident, but I knew I needed more to stay on this newfound path. During treatment, I connected with a chef who offered me a job after I got out, a temporary sponsor who introduced me to a twelve-step program, and a full-time sponsor who continued guiding me. I also had the opportunity to tour a sober living house—a place that has not only changed my life but has also saved my sobriety multiple times. Today, I am four months into living at one of Transformative Lives' sober living homes, and it has become the most powerful tool in maintaining my recovery. I’ve been blessed to meet incredible people who I now call friends and to live a life I never thought possible. Thank God for second chances.”

Success Story of the Month:
This month, we want to highlight one of our Managers from the Rock Island, River House, Jeff S.:
“Nine months ago I was hopeless, lost, and felt alone in the grips of a harrowing addiction. Desperate for help, I admitted myself into a 30-day inpatient program. While I was there, my case manager told me I was going into sober living. Knowing my only other option was to return to my parents’ dreadful basement, I didn’t contest the suggestion.
Moving into sober living in my early recovery was one of the best decisions I made. With the structure, accountability, and support of my housemates, I can stay committed to my recovery, regularly attending meetings and building meaningful relationships. Becoming a house manager was a turning point in my journey. It’s both an honor and responsibility. Leading by example, and proving that long term recovery is achievable with commitment and accountability. The experience has strengthened my leadership skills, deepened my recovery, and has given me a newfound sense of purpose. Most importantly, it’s allowed me to help others succeed in their recovery.”

January 2025: Monthly Newsletter
We are excited to bring you the latest updates and news from our sober living homes. As we close out another year, we are proud of the progress made by our residents, the continued support from our community, and the work we’ve done to provide safe, supportive, and sober living environments. Here's a quick look at what's happening:
Rock Island Home:

As many of our Rock Island House residents have successfully transitioned back into independent living, we now have five openings available. If you or someone you know is looking for a structured, supportive environment to continue their recovery journey, now is the time to apply. Our program offers a stable foundation for individuals committed to long-term sobriety and personal transformation.
Davenport Home:
Full!
We are thrilled to announce that Davenport House is currently at full capacity! This reflects the dedication and commitment of our residents to their recovery journeys. We are incredibly proud of each individual who has made the choice to embrace sober living and personal growth. Keep up the great work!
Success Story of the Month:
This month, we want to highlight one of our residents from the Davenport House. Matt S., who has transitioned out of our homes recently: “I moved into one of Transformative Lives’ sober living homes last year after completing residential treatment at Top of the World Ranch. When sober living was first recommended to me by my counselor, I rejected the idea. I didn’t think it was necessary or that it would be beneficial, but now I believe it was the best decision I’ve made to this point in my recovery. During past attempts to get and stay clean, I would transition directly back to the unhealthy environment in which I was living while in my addiction. I put myself into a stressful environment with no social support. Sober living gave me the opportunity to navigate the challenges of life with the help of a support network that I would not have had at home. It also helped me to develop healthy friendships with other men in the house and to learn how to have fun without the use of drugs and alcohol. Many of my closest friendships today are the ones I made while in sober living. Sober living gave me the time I needed in a structured environment after leaving treatment and allowed me to develop the skills and habits that have been foundational to my recovery.”
